Top 15 Ugandan Celebrities Turned into Politicians

Celebrities have vast and sensitive task of influencing the social, political and economical culture of locals in the country and many execute the duty in many professions mention musicians, and journalists since they hold a lion’s share with a mouth piece to for the agenda setting of the people’s way of living.

Below are some of the famous Ugandan celebrities who have made a great influence after crossing from their renown professions to the most tricky game of politicking in Uganda.

1. Hon. Judith Babirye


She is a Ugandan gospel musician, a senior pastor at ‘New Life Deliverance Church’ in Makindye Division, Kampala city council who holds a bachelors degree of Arts in Tourism. She realized her music career with her debut song ‘Beera Nange’ winning the gospel single in the Pearl of Africa Music Awatrds hence she never turned back realizing more hit singles like ‘Wambatira’ Omusaayi gwa Yesu’, Ekitibwa kyo mukama’, and ‘ Maama’ that touched changed people’s lives to righteousness. It is from here that she gained political fame thus turning down the odds as she claimed the 2016 parliamentary polls to become Buikwe parliamentary legislator.

2. Hon. Kato Lubwama {Biiso}


He is one of the veteran journalists in Uganda majoring in radio comedy at CBS Fm and went on to start up the Diamond Assembles drama and music group where he produced love ballads caught attention of many band music fanatics. He has persevered to the August house surviving on comedy with his famous morning radio show skit ‘Kalisoliso’ on Cbs fm being a point to mention and it was in j2016 presidential and parliamentary elections that gave Kato Lubwama ka chance to become a prominent politician after beating on incumbent John Ken Lukyamuzi ‘The Man’ to become the newly elected Rubaga South Mp despite the pending court suits over his academic qualifications.

3. Hon. Peter Ssematimba


He is also a veteran journalist in Uganda’s media, a prolific dancer and a good entertainer who rose to stardom as one of the founding employees of CbS FM, later forming his own Mengo based radio Station Super fm. He has been contesting on many occasions for political office mention Lord Mayor Ship being defeated by former city mayor Hajji Nasser Ntege Ssebagala and incumbent mayor Hajji Elias Lukwago. Recently he contested for Busiro south Member of Parliament post where he emerged victorious but is still in the courts of law after appealing his dismissal from the August house by the high court in Kampala for lacking certified academic documents.

4. Matia Lwanga Bwanika


He gained more popular in 2006 while a radio presenter at Mengo based Super fm owned by Busiro South legislator Hon. Peter Ssematimba and its from here that he rose to the political arena but he has been a Democratic party die hard till know and the current Wakiso district Lcv chairperson is well known as a mouth watered politician who wins whatever fight he throws up mention the fight with the Chinese over the reclamation of Wakiso wetlands that went his way.

5. Bobi Wine


Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine is a Ugandan dancehall musician well known for his swag and music that is full of edutainment messages and challenges facing the locals living in down town. His wisdom and charisma enabled his convince the electorate of Kyadondo East in June this year to vote for him to the August house. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music, dance and drama from Makerere university and is currently pursing law but all in all he isn’t dropping music a field that made him what he is right know and is going on with the entertaining of the nation.

6. Kasibante Moses


He is also a product of media starting up his political journey as a news anchor at Bulange based kabaka’s radio station Cbs Fm and kudos should go to Mukono municipality MP Betty Nambooze Bakireke aka’ Madam Teacher ‘who mentored him to contest for the Rubaga North parliamentary seat beating on Indian entrepreneur Singh Katongole to get the limelight of debating in the august house and in the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections, he managed to defeat the current minister for Kampala city Betty Namisango Kamya to reclaim his seat in parliament.

7. Sam Gombya {Magulu Asatu}


He is famous in the Ugandan music industry as a singer majoring in love songs well known for his hit song ‘Sebo Muko’, a social activist and also a radio presenter currently with the evening show at Dembe Fm and his political road started while a presenter at Simba Fm from where he emerged up to contest as a lord councilor representing the disabled at the Kampala capital city authority council. He has taken part in the campaign against tobacco and is married to fellow musician Sophie Gombya.

8. Ragga Dee


He is popularly known currently as the ‘grand father’ of Ugandan music’, one of the veteran musicians that have fought to hype Uganda’s music industry with hit songs like ‘Cissy’ and Kankukube Empeeta’. He began his road to politics as an Nrm candidate contesting for mayor ship back in 2016 where he was beaten hands down by Democratic party’s Elias Lukwago by till know he has hasn’t left the game go and he is overseeing the progress of the Kampala city transport section-motor bike riders aka Boda bodas on behalf of the central government.

9. Eddy Yawe


He is the elder brother to the Kyadondo East legislator Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu aka Bobi Wine and despite the fact that he remains a big figure in the Uganda’s music industry being a singer with a Afrigo band, a music producer and writer, he has not let go the political field. He canvassed for votes in 2011 in Kampala central vying for the area parliamentary seat on the Democratic party ticket only to lose to Nrm’s Mohammed Nsereko to the August house by a whisker but till know he is still an active figure in the Ugandan politics and he was a figure in the recently concluded Kyadondo East by elections where he solicited for votes and support for his young brother Bobi Wine to win the area to the August house.

10. Justine Nameere


Justine Nameere, a daughter to the minister of agriculture Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja and one of Uganda’s top TV presenters who rose to stardom while at the Serena based NTV station doing the ‘Life stories’ show where she resigned over uncertainties with the top management mention managing director Aggie Konde. The Bukedde Tv presenter recently contested for the parliamentary seat of the youth in the central region though disappointing losing the seat though she had pulled strings with the father who was against her wish of standing in. News from credible sources shows that Nameere is ready to contest come 2021 for the very seat so as to reach the august house once in a lifetime.

11. Hon. Joyce Naboosa Ssebugwawo


She is currently the municipal mayor for Rubaga division in Kampala capital city authority whose road to politics began as a radio news anchor at Cbs Fm, Mengo minister for works and Women affairs and is also the current the FDC party deputy president.

12. Mulindwa Muwonge {The late}


He has just passed away in July succumbing to hypertension at Nsambya hospital and the former radio personality who began his trade with Cbs Fm, Super Fm and later Star Fm, he was a water mouthed presenter well informed about the political arena and a diehard of the current NRM regime.

13. Paddy Bitama Saali {The late}


The former Amarula family CEO is a comedian and a people’s favorite who made sure he revises his books to the fullest to make people cry because of his hilarious comedy skits. Bitama became more popular when he picked out nomination forms from the electoral commission in 20ll and the once known presidential hopeful spoilt the soup when he couldn’t make up the required signatures by the electoral commission to stand for the commander-in-chief’s­ post to the state house. If the dead could speak, then Bitama could speak loudest and his death made more news headlines when two parties came out to claim to be his blood mention the one led by Peter Njegula, the alleged dad who is said to have appeared upon Bitama’s death and Richard Tamale who claimed to be the heir whose home Bitama grew up, the late Sam Tamale.

14. Charles James Senkubuge


He is the CEO of Bakayimbira dramactors and a former p[residential hopeful in 2011 who later gave up on the race for unknown reasons. He worked with Simba Fm in their popular morning show dubbed ‘Bisanga Wano’ and is currently manning the House of prayer ministries media stations Salt TV and radio as manager.

15.Hon. Mbwa Tekemwa Gaffa


Little is known about the later but he managed to raise to the political field after years of service with Tropical Fm found in Mubende district doing the evening political show ‘Sisinkana Ens’ and behind a mouth watered figure and politician did a lot to see to it that he defends the rights of the poor the district through his radio program mention in his Kasambya constituency thus winning many hearts of the locals to send him in the August house in 2016 when he showed his interest for the Kasambya constituency seat.
