President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has finished receiving a report probing the allegations of mismanagement and corruption in the Uganda National Roads Authority- UNRA, which was handed over to him today.
The report was from the appointed commission of Inquiry which was headed by Justice Catherine Bamugemereire as they expose the weakness of the UNRA in delivering services, the stealing of public resources and the loses the country has suffered at the hands of some UNRA officers and contractors.
UNRA got a new boss appointed 2years back Mrs Allen Kagina who fired more than 1000 officers from the Roads Authority in the name of fighting corruption and shoddy works. But still corruption remained rampant which led to the appointment of a committee to do investigations.
Here is what President Museveni said
“The commission of inquiry probing allegations of mismanagement and corruption in the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has handed over its report to me.
I want to thank Justice Catherine Bamugemereire and her team for doing a commendable job. This will be our basis for crushing corruption in the roads sector. The report has made it simple for us to follow up issues in UNRA and highlighted the weakness of insider dealings.
The report shows the losses the country has suffered at the hands of some UNRA officials plus other collaborators who include some contractors.
These people stealing public resources must stop. I am going to handle them. They are going to be arrested. I have also directed accounting officers to ensure timely inspection of government programmes. No inspection leads people into temptation. Political leaders must also play their oversight role well.”
It’s not yet known about what could be the contents in the report but from his reaction, we are expecting to see so big Fish arrested, others fired and others suspended.
President Museveni promised that among the chief objectives in these five years is the fight against corruption that he wants to zero, though it still sounds like a nightmare to others, fighting the corruption that has accumulated during the thirty years of his rule.
