Joseph Musasizi Kifefe (1963- November 29, 2007) was the youngest brother of the FDC Former party President and Flag bearer Kizza Besigye who died in detention in 2007 after spending 3 years in prison on treason charges.
On Nov 23, 2004, he was arrested by the security operatives from the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) in Kampala Uganda he was charged with Treason on allegations that he was a member of a rebel group known as PRA (People’s Redemption Army) that was based in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He was later accused also of murdering John Byarugaba in Bushenyi on July 17, 2002.
Dr. Kizza Besigye was also arrested and joined them in Luzira a year later after his return from South Africa to run for presidency in 2005 however, Besigye was later released on Bail.
On June 12, 2007, Musasizi was granted bail by the High Court because of grave sickness and was taken to Mulago Hospital where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. According to the medical report, Musasizi died of kidney and liver problems.
Various groups reported that the death was as a result of poisoning that was given to him while in prison. The UK Parliament tabled a motion asking the Ugandan government to investigate his death and also asked the Judiciary to try all the charged members including those who were arrested and those who were released on bail asking them either to convict them or free them.
“Am happy am out on bail. The case is not yet complete. The major consideration [of granting me bail] was my health conditions. My release on bail is an indication that some semblance of rule of law is taking shape. My prayer is that my co-accused be allowed to exercise their right to bail. I wish they grant them bail so that this case can be done away with.” These were the last documented words of Joseph Musasizi before he died.
