Education Concepts Ltd managed to organize a successful inaugural Western Uganda Career Guidance Fair that took place at Ntare School in Mbarara on Saturday 11th March 2017. The event was attended by students from Western Uganda Secondary Schools, under the theme “Shaping Career Decisions In The Context Of Uganda’s Competitive Job Market”
Reality is, a lot of young Ugandans just go through school to make their parents happy! “I want to get a degree and Mom happy”, they say. Some just focus on doing what they consider easy subjects and by the time they go to University, it is simply about what course falls within their range of points. This has left a lot of young Ugandan graduates stranded. However, how can we blame the students for that kind of mindset if we have never given them any guidance? It gets even worse, remembering that majority of the parents are semi-literate or illiterate peasants who wouldn’t have so much of career knowledge to offer their children.
It is against that Background that Education Concepts organised The First Western Uganda Career Guidance Fair, with the aim of helping students to shape career decisions when they still have the time.
The speakers included Mrs. Amanda Ngabirano – Makerere University Lecturer and Public Speaker who gave a Keynote Address, Nicklison Twinamatsiko – Civil Engineer, Kyambogo University Lecturer and author of The Chwezi Code who spoke about the role of communication skills in career advancement, Solomon Agum – Assistant Registrar Mbarara University, who spoke about Subject Combinations, A team from Uganda Business And Technical Examinations Board (UBTEB), which shared with the students, business and technical skills.
